Through the Editor's Eyes

The Isolation Connection: Enter the Void

Catherine Groves

Catherine Groves begins her editorial by asking, "Isn't it a bit uncanny how our culture was pretty much in the throes of social distancing by our rather extreme focus on social media and other online pursuits — and how nature then threw a pandemic at us?" Groves looks at the effects, both the dark and the bright, of isolation. And, naturally, there are all sorts of separation from others — freelancing from home, living as a senior, incarceration and illness just scratch the surface. Also examined are the differences between Christianity and New Age spiritualities when it comes to the concept of oneness, and its role in helping us through this often difficult time. Could isolation and and the void have something in common?

Black Hole Sun

Robert M. Price

On a solo drive from North Carolina to New York, Robert M. Price reflected on what he called his "pack-rat" behavior. As he explained, "I could suddenly see that all these preoccupations, all these tendencies and compulsions, were frantic attempts to fill some void in me.... And then it seemed to me that what I needed to do instead was to somehow learn to brace the circular walls of the Void within me, to keep it open because that cavity was a womb which had to be open and empty to make room for something new to be born." "Black Hole Sun" was originally published in our April-June 1996 C*NAQ, an issue dedicated to the theme of the void.

Commandments for the New Normal

N. Michel Landaiche III and Catherine Groves

If we're stuck with coronavirus for now, why not have some fun with it? With intriguing graphics and tongue-in-cheek verbiage, N. Michel Landaiche III and Groves have teamed up to offer readers ten refreshed commandments carrying mandates for the new normal.

Beloved Dark

Judith Eir Landaiche

Judith Eir Landaiche writes, "Gaps in the ordinary can cause heartbeats to quicken and souls to cringe, all the while subtly promising infinity." As the author of this piece has experienced, to jump into the void can be terrifying. Yet it can also offer a priceless revelation. This essay hails, as did Price's, from the April-June 1996 issue.
